Shaima Al-Tamimi

Shaima Al-Tamimi is a Yemeni-East African visual storyteller, photographer and filmmaker based in Qatar. Her work is inspired by social issues reflective of her lived experiences, drawing on themes of migration, healing and sociocultural issues within her environment.

In her latest commission, Shaima was tasked by the Qatar Museums to document the current Flour Mill Factory before it is demolished to make way for the new Art Mill 2030 museum. This is Shaima’s first major commission as a photographer, where she delivered two bodies of work that capture the universality of flour and questions its migratorial identity.

In 2020 Al-Tamimi was a Photography and Social Justice Fellow at the Magnum Foundation,where she developed her multimedia film Don’t Get Too Comfortable (2021), which was nominated for the Orizzonti Award for Best Short Film at the Venice International Film Festival. The film screened at over 35 film festivals around the world and was showcased at Bottega Veneta Square Majlis, a custom built space for the film.

Shaima also serves as a consultant to Youth of the World (YWT Org) developing their programs and strategy. YWT is a Yemeni NGO that provides development and training to Yemeni creatives. She is also a long term contributing member to “Everyday Middle East”. Her work has been showcased in Mathaf, Yuz Shanghai Museum, Photo Espana, Kraftwerk Berlin, M7 Qatar, Camille Gallery, Gulf Photo Plus.
