END OF AN ERA. This summer Mr. Afzal Butt closed his Pakistani sweet shop after almost 47 years on Electra Street in Abu Dhabi. If you've passed by the area you'd have noticed this spot (and probably giggled a little inside). I went for a quick chat to say goodbye. He wouldn't stop talking about his memories as a teenage boy in Abu Dhabi before the Emirates was formed. He served in the military and the late Sheikh Zayed was one of his recurrent and friendliest customers. Times are now different and Afzal took the decision to close down due to exorbitant rents that leave small business owned shops like his no chance to continue their craft. We were going to ask our driver to pick up some Knafeh, but just because we’re girls it doesn’t mean we can’t enter a male congested shop. At a couscous making facility in Marrakesh that only employs female villagers run my Mrs. Hafida Alahi. These women (mostly elderly) walk anywhere between 5 to 10 km in harsh weather conditions due to lack of transportation. They proudly contribute to the dying craft of hand made couscous, and are also one of the first facilities to make gluten free couscous from cactus flour which grows in abundance in their village.
